1、hardworking adj.努力的
这个应该是最常见的了，它来自词组work hard（努力工作），加上了ing就成了形容词，意思就是“努力工作的；勤奋的”。
I like your down-to-earth and hardworking spirit.
我就喜欢你们这股扎扎实实埋头苦干的劲儿。
2、industrious adj.勤勉的；常年奔忙的
这个形容词来自名词industry，它的意思是很简单的，不就是“工业，产业”嘛。
不过作为名词，它还有一个意思，表示“勤勉；勤劳”。
这个时候看一下它的词根就知道了。
indu-表示in（在里面），str-表示structure（构造，组织），所以说呢，industry就表示在里面构建起各种东西（机器），这个整体就是“工业”，同时有了引申义“勤勉，勤劳”。
而-ous这个后缀也是很常见的，表示“充满…的”、“具有……特征的”。

3、diligent adj.勤奋的；用功的；坚持不懈的
看一下它的英语释义：
showing care and effort in your work or duties
所以我觉得diligent强调了一种仔细认真的努力。
All day long Sally was a good and diligent bookkeeper and salesman.
赛利一天到晚勤勤恳恳地当一个好簿记员和售货员。
4、arduous adj.费力的；辛勤的；险峻的
这个词跟其他表示“努力”的形容词不一样，它形容的是一种很艰难的境地，一种需要很多辛勤付出的境地：difficult, needing a lot of effort and energy。
Despite very severe weather, the arduous search was maintained for seven days.
虽然气候十分凛冽，这种辛苦的搜索，持续了七天之久。
We must persevere in the arduous work.
我们一定要坚持这项艰苦的工作。
5、strive vi.奋斗；努力；力求；斗争
英语释义：to try very hard to do something or to make something happen, especially for a long time or against difficulties
再看一下常见搭配：
strive for奋斗
strive with同...作斗争...
strive against反抗
strive to争取，追求
strive against the stream不随波逐流
可以看出，strive这个词很严肃，描述了一种艰苦卓绝style的努力或者抗争。
We will strive for peace in the troubled areas of the world.
我们会在世界的动乱地区致力和平。
We should all strive to reunify the motherland.
我们共同努力，实现祖国统一。
6、endeavor n./v.努力；试图
英语释义：an effort or attempt to do something
这个词表示试图或努力做一些什么，不像strive这类词充满了“艰苦奋斗”的意味。
endeavor after wealth(happiness)
努力追求财富（幸福）
We make every endeavor to satisfy our customers.
我们尽全力使顾客满意。
7、apply vt.应用；涂；使专心从事
它的英语释义是：to work at something or study something very hard。
所以可不要以为apply只有“申请，应用”的意思，它还可以表示“勤奋工作，努力学习”哦。
看一下例句：
You will only pass your exams if you really apply yourself (to your work).
你只有全力以赴，考试才能及格。
因此，apply的常见搭配是：apply yourself或者是apply yourself/something to something/to doing something。
8、exert vt.运用；施加
英语释义：exert yourself to make a big physical or mental effort
它指的是：耗费肉体或精神上的努力。
You have to exert more efforts if you want to catch up with your classmates.
你要想赶上你的同学的话，就得多花些功夫。
常见搭配：
exert all one's strength
用尽全身力气
exert every ounce of one's energy
竭尽所能
9、extend v.延伸；延长；伸展；扩展；提供；使竭尽全力
英语释义：extend somebody/something/yourself to make somebody/something use all their effort, abilities, supplies, etc.
extend的本义是“伸展，扩展，延长”，就跟明星喜欢跨界挑战自己一样，这也是很努力的意思了。
Tom didn't really have to extend himself in the examination.
汤姆这次考试大可不必那么拼命。
